The Center for Justice & Accountability (CJA) is an international human rights organization dedicated to deterring torture and other severe human rights abuses around the world and advancing the rights of survivors to seek truth, justice and redress.
CJA uses litigation to hold perpetrators individually accountable for human rights abuses, develop human rights law, and advance the rule of law in countries transitioning from periods of abuse.
Overview
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development & Outreach Director (DOD) leads CJA’s development and outreach activities from design through implementation. This position works closely with the Executive Director, a development assistant, CJA’s management team and Board of Directors to raise $1.5 million annually. The DOD guides major donor programs, foundation grants, law firm donations, publications, and events.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop, articulate and implement CJA’s development strategy consistent with the strategic plan. (The plan focus is on increasing visibility and major donor support.)
- Develop and manage the annual development calendar
- Oversee foundation grants and reporting, major donor cultivation, corporate and law firm giving, publications, and events.
- Support the Executive Director in developing and securing major gifts.
- Develop marketing materials (an annual report and regular newsletters) consistent with CJA’s brand.
- Oversee the production of relevant content for the CJA website, social media and electronic communications to CJA supporters
- Work the with Board of Directors (and relevant Board Committees) to strengthen their role in fundraising and development
Professional Qualifications
- A proven track record of success in nonprofit development work, including major donor cultivation, grant writing, annual appeals and special events.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, analytic, organizational and planning skills.
- Thrives as part of a team with diverse experience, expertise, skills and objectives.
- Strength in multi-tasking, goal-setting and workload prioritization.
- Commitment to international human rights.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience and an ongoing commitment to professional development.
- Ability and willingness to travel occasionally in the U.S. and internationally.
- High energy and a sense of humor.
