Haiti: How Can I Help? — Models for Donors Seeking Long-Term Impact (June 25, 2010)

roy Helping Haitians to Rebuild and Restart the Economy

Reeta Roy, President and CEO, MasterCard Foundation

At the six-month anniversary of the Haiti earthquake, it is natural to stop and reflect on the international donor community's role in the rebuilding effort. Many have criticized programs that do not empower local organizations and rebuild infrastructure and have called for improvements in donor coordination and the pace of progress. The MasterCard Foundation's partnership with Fonkoze, the largest microfinance provider in Haiti, reaffirmed our approach to finding the best partners on the ground and working with programs that empower Haitians to rebuild and restart the Haitian economy.

Our work with Fonkoze began before the earthquake in January. Its approach to microfinance is exactly what the MasterCard Foundation supports: providing microfinance services with comprehensive mentoring, literacy training, and financial education to the poorest families. The repayment rate and the social gains made, including greater food security and sending more children to school, validate the wisdom of this approach.

Then the earthquake struck....

The Right Message, The Right People, The Right Time

davisandwilkins Allison Van Diest, senior product marketing manager at Blackbaud, describes how to use email strategically to improve your organization's fundraising results....

Why has email become such a critical channel of communication for nonprofits? Today's donor is more comfortable online and needs information now — they read email before snail mail; they expect personalized information that's immediate and available to them on their own schedule. Organizations that interact with each constituent in terms that are relevant to him or her find it easier to cultivate affinity and support. With email, organizations can send more relevant information more frequently, thanks to the channel's cost effectiveness and measurability.

Is your organization using email as effectively as you'd like? The average organization is experiencing around a 4 percent conversion rate on calls to action, raising 5 percent of total funds online, growing the email subscriber list at 17 percent each year, and retaining at least 81 percent of those subscribers. If your organization is falling short on these metrics, you may need to revisit your strategic plan to identify areas where you can improve....

On the blog, Laura Cronin, director of the New York City-based Toshiba America Foundation, speaks with Boston College Law School professor Ray Madoff about the legal framework and impact of so-called dynasty trusts. Here's an excerpt:

Laura Cronin: Let me begin by congratulating you on writing such an interesting, and often quite funny, book about the serious topics of death and taxes. In addition to being surprised by all the humor in a book on this subject, many readers of this blog might be startled to learn that much of what seems like long-standing tradition in the field of charitable trusts and foundations is relatively new. Can you start with a bit of history?

Ray Madoff: Thank you for your kind words.

This is one of the many surprising things I learned in my study of how the law treats interests of the dead. Private charitable trusts are so ubiquitous and many of them have been around for so long that I assumed this had always been the case.

However, it turns out that for much of this country's early history, while a person could give outright to an existing charitable entity, the law did not grant — to quote a case of the time — "every private citizen the right to create a perpetuity for such purposes as to him seem good."

The private charitable trust had been well established in English law and was brought to this country by English settlers. However, after the Revolutionary War, the new American states had to reconsider whether they were going to continue to follow the law of England or to create rules that better reflected the values of the new republic....

PND Talk
PND Talk The PND message board is open, and here's a sample of what we're talking about...

Q: I am a 2009 college graduate interested in fundraising, development, and grant writing in general. My first job out of college was at a nonprofit and unfortunately (and directly due to fundraising problems) was among many eliminated. I am doing some freelance writing now and really feel driven to help other nonprofits access the money they need. How to I go about learning about grant writing with the goal of eventually getting a job in the field? What resources are trustworthy? Are there internships available for college graduates?

A: My introduction to development came at the public relations office of my alma mater. You might try going to the institutional advancement department of your college and inquire about a grantwriting internship. I learned to write grants by reading the proposals written by development personnel, adapting the best of what worked for them into my own style. Good luck!
