Gates, Clinton Call for More Efficient Use of AIDS Funding

Addressing twenty thousand AIDS scientists, health workers, and activists at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna this week, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation co-chair Bill Gates and former U.S. President Bill Clinton urged AIDS activists to get the most out of every dollar given to fight HIV/AIDS, saying efficiency savings are vital in delivering HIV/AIDS prevention services and treatment in the countries hardest hit and at highest risk. Gates outlined several key opportunities for AIDS investments to be more cost-effective and have greater impact, including rapid scale up of cost-effective prevention tools, better use of data to make prevention decisions, reductions in the cost of delivering treatment, and greater investments in vaccines and other breakthrough tools.

XVIII International AIDS Conference

The International AIDS Society and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation are making available, via the Kaiser Foundation's Global Health Gateway, a variety of online resources related to the XVIII International AIDS Conference, July 18-23, in Vienna, Austria. The resources include more than fifty webcasts of conference sessions, live webcasts of the conference's opening and closing sessions, daily video recaps of conference developments with Science magazine's Jon Cohen, and an expanded version of Kaiser's Daily Global Health Policy Report.

PKD Foundation

Founded by Joseph H. Bruening and Dr. Jared J. Grantham in 1982, the PKD Foundation funds research to find a treatment and cure for polycystic kidney disease while also advocating for people suffering from the disease, which causes fluid-filled cysts to form on the kidneys, diminishing their ability to filter toxins from the blood. Visitors to the organization's Web site can access information about PKD; find a local PKD chapter; explore the latest science, health, and lifestyle news; and watch videos and webinars on a range of topics related to the disease.

Clinical Research Grants

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has announced more than $13 million in grants through its Medical Research Program to support the career development of clinical researchers and increase the foundation's commitment to innovative research on sickle cell disease. As of December 31, 2009, the program — which in keeping with the wishes of Doris Duke does not fund research that utilizes animals — had approved more than 365 grants totaling approximately $229 million.
