In the current economy, nonprofit organizations are looking for creative ways to raise money. But nonprofits should be aware of the many legal requirements that govern fundraising, both from the IRS and the State of Georgia. Arm yourself with information to avoid problems down the road.
Fundraising 102 will discuss fundraising ideas and the tax implications of each, including:
- Sponsorships
- Cause marketing
- Gaming
- Gala events
- Selling merchandise and property
Presenters:
Robyn Miller, Staff Attorney, Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta
Ms. Miller has more than 17 years of corporate and tax-exempt law experience, including six years at Ernst & Young working primarily in the nonprofit arena. Ms. Miller is a cum laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison and earned a J.D. from the New York University School of Law. As a part time staff attorney for Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta, Ms. Miller provides direct legal services to non-profit organizations as well as serves as a resource to Pro Bono Partnership’s volunteer attorneys and non-profit clients. She also works to educate lawyers and clients on non-profit legal issues and recruits volunteer attorneys, with a focus on recruiting in-house lawyers.
Mindy Simon, Deputy General Counsel, Emory University
Mindy Simon is an Associate General Counsel focusing on taxation and corporate matters. Prior to joining Emory's Office of the General Counsel in August 2004, Mindy practiced as an attorney in the tax section of an Atlanta law firm, where she specialized in general federal taxation and the representation of tax-exempt organizations. Mindy received her B.A. from Rhodes College in 1993 and her J.D. cum laude from the University of Tennessee in 1999, where she served as a research editor on the Tennessee Law Review. Mindy serves on the board of directors of Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta and the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers.
